Moh. Mirza Nuryadi, M.Sc, one of the lecturers at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang, successfully gained a memorable experience. He set his feet in Spain through the exchange program of academic staff. Collaborating with the University of Murcia, he improved his teaching experience there.
"Actually, I have prepared myself since 2021. However, there's a slight obstacle due to the pandemic and its restrictions. Alhamdulillah, my early preparation has worked in my favor," he explained.
In addition to having a teaching chance there, Mirza also visited the Faculty of Medicine and discussed research he presented in front of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students there. His research focused on biochemistry leading to reproduction: the resistance of Aedes aegypti — mosquitoes cause red fever. From the study, he has also published some national and international scientific articles.
Regarding the teaching system there, he found that each class has a classification. One is English class, which facilitates students to practice their English skills steadily. It can benefit the students when a guest or a lecturer uses the same language.
"The learning way of students there isn't much more different than Indonesians'. It's just there is more trust between lecturers and students so that they can explore themselves, but still under the lecturers' supervision," the alumnus of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Sumenep added.
He also didn't waste time while in Spain. He tried to obtain new experiences when he had free time by visiting various locations and tasting different foods. He tried various fish preparations mixed with vegetables and potatoes. Unfortunately, the taste didn't fit Mirza's palate, so he preferred another food.
"In fact, there is a food I think is suitable, but its location is far from the suburbs. There are kebab and biryani rice also, which relatively fits my taste," he added.
Mirza also visited the city of Madrid. Its people's hospitality has amazed him. Even though most people there can't speak English, they help direct confused and lost visitors.
