THROUGH mentoring program in speaking learning, English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (FKIP UMM) strived in order students capable to teach each other with a relaxed situation, fun approach, but with a fixed target.
In this program, students who are in the fourth semester and above were given opportunity to teach speaking to new students in the even semester for nine weeks starting from March 11, 2017 to May 6, 2017. According to the coordinator of the mentoring program, Teguh Hadi Saputro, this program could improve students' speaking skill ability.
"All the material is delivered in a relaxed and with pleasant atmosphere and method," explained the lecturer of English Department of UMM at the closing ceremony of mentoring program on Saturday (5/6).
Some of the materials presented in the mentoring program were presentation skills, discussion skills and debating skills. With these three materials, students were expected to be more fluent in English speaking. In addition, throughr mentoring program, the students could be more confident when speaking English in front of many people.
"We have done supervision and assessment, through this program students have confidence to speak in the classroom. Even if asking questions to lecturers in the classroom, they are confident in using English," said Teguh.
In addition, it was not just a learning problem which was targeted by the English Education Department, but also introduction of mentoring program to all UMM students. According to Teguh, using gazebo as a place of learning and also using a special identity, this program would be known by UMM students. (Jal / han)
