Imsak is a familiar term for Muslims who fast during Ramadan, which marks the end of the suhoor time and the beginning of the fasting time. Agus Supriadi, Lc., M.H.I, from the Islamic Family Law Department of the Faculty of Islamic Studies, explains that imsak, al imsak, or as shoum etymologically means refraining from eating, drinking, and having sexual intercourse from dawn until dusk. Then, imsak and fasting share the same meaning: to refrain.

The term imsak itself is famous in Indonesia and has a particular meaning. Referring to the 1400s, imsak began to hear in the Ottoman Turks era, and so did in Egypt. The concerned term is the five until the 10-minute moment before the dawn call to prayer resounds.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs of Indonesia, through its reckoning and rukyat team in 2016, and also Islamic clerics in Indonesia agreed with a special schedule related to imsak time. The schedule is used as a reminder or a signal for those who fast to get ready for refraining, including eating and drinking.

"Usually, imsak time is used to wash teeth and mouth from food leftovers after suhoor. It can be by gargling or also washing teeth," adds he.

Then, what if someone eats and drinks when the imsak time lasts? The UMM lecturer known as Agus explains that eating and drinking during imsak is permissible. It is because, basically, the fasting time begins when the dawn call to prayer is heard.

"Explained in the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), from Zayd ibn Thabit (May Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah explains that the gap between athan and suhoor is just reading 50 verses. This hadith was narrated by Bukhari and Muslim," says Agus.

In the hadith, the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Indonesia agrees that the imsak time is approximately 5-1o minutes before dawn. Remember that imsak is not the mandatory sign for us to stop suhoor. "Imsak is just a warning signal for us not to excessively having a pre-dawn meal," ends Agus. (imh/sep/wil)
