President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, inaugurated a number of special advisors and agency heads on October 22. Among them was the former Rector of Muhammadiyah Malang University (UMM), Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, M.A.P., who was appointed as the President’s Special Advisor on Hajj Affairs. Muhadjir’s appointment was not without reason, considering his extensive leadership experience, not only at UMM but also in other strategic roles in the Indonesian government.

After serving as the rector for three consecutive terms from 2000 to 2016, Muhadjir was entrusted by President Joko Widodo to become the Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud). Thanks to his excellent performance, he was later appointed as the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs (Menko PMK), a role he held until 2024. In addition to his government roles, he also held various responsibilities, such as the Chairman of the Daily Board of Trustees (BPH) at UMM and one of the chairs of the central leadership of Muhammadiyah.

Previously, another former rector of UMM, Prof. Fauzan, was also trusted by Prabowo to serve as the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Wamen Diktisaintek) in the Red and White Cabinet. The appointments of Muhadjir and Fauzan highlight UMM's success in producing exceptional leaders for the nation.

Regarding the selection of Muhadjir and Fauzan, UMM Rector Prof. Dr. Nazaruddin Malik, M.Si., stated that UMM always provides ample opportunities for its academic community to nurture their talents and leadership qualities. According to him, this is how the "White Campus" contributes to the nation by producing its best cadres.

“The appointment of Prof. Muhadjir as the President's Special Advisor and Prof. Fauzan as the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology proves that UMM’s White Campus has successfully produced excellent human resources who contribute at the national level,” Nazar explained.

Long before Muhadjir and Fauzan, UMM also produced Prof. Abdul Malik Fadjar, who successfully carried out his duties in two cabinet periods. First, as the Minister of Religious Affairs in the Reformasi Pembangunan Cabinet, and later as the Minister of National Education in the Gotong Royong Cabinet.
