The figure of General Soedirman as the Father of Hizbul Wathan (HW) scouting must be imitated and inspire all scouting members, as said by the President of Muhammadiyah Central Leader, Prof. Dr. Haedar Nashir, M.Si. in the opening event of the HW congress held at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) on July 27. On the same occasion, Prof. Dr. Abdul Mu’ti, M.Ed., the Secretary of Muhammadiyah Central Leader, also gave his welcoming remarks. The agenda was followed by more than 7000 enthusiasts and 3100 grand camp participants, who enlivened it.
In the Congress, Abdul Mu’ti inaugurated a great commander, General Soedirman, as the father of HW scouting. Prior to his military service, Soedirman was actively participating in the youth organization of HW. Due to the education gained from Muhammadiyah, he had a spirit for defending the homeland.
Haedar asserts that the HW Congress must be a process that can generate essential programs and decisions to advance the organization and the nation, not only for a routine and formal activity. Hizbul Wathan must provide novelty, so it will not stagnate.
“Make this Congress a strategic agenda to create better leadership, which involves those who are well-experienced and are young with fresh ideas. HW is a cross-age-and-group inclusive movement. Thus, it must have a transformative and progressive leadership system,” said Haedar.
He also encourages HW to bring the missions of progressive Islam, so it can align with Muhammadiyah—especially in applying them in real life and providing solutions for the nations’ issues, given that the nationality reputation is always inherent in Hizbul Wathan.
The same idea was emphasized by the President of the HW Scouting Movement, Rmd. Endra Widyarsono. According to him, correlation and collaboration are the keys to contribution. Hizbul Wathan Scouting has been trained, resilient, helpful, and compassionate to all creatures, so it is believed to adapt well to a new era.
“No matter how small the benefits are, HW scouting must and will always be able to share and contribute. Armed with the having given training, participants will be able to become human beings who are ready and able to overcome various challenges in the new era of life,” said Endra.
As the host of this prestigious event, UMM felt proud and fully supported this agenda. Prof. Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd., the Rector of UMM, asserts that this HW Congress should generate useful things, not only for the Muhammadiyah people but also for broader society. “The commitment to innovate and provide solutions for the nation should be embedded in HW Scouting as the name Hizbul Wathan means: the defender of homeland,” concluded the Rector.
On the same occasion, many performances also amazed the audience. One was the opening dancing performed by hundreds of HW scouting members. The marching band of UMM also entertained the attending guests. Last but not least, Lazismu donated 2500 Qur’ans and provided 4000 bowls of meatballs for the participants and enthusiasts at the HW Congress. (imh/zak/wil)
