The release of thousands of zebra doves marked the opening of the New Student Introduction Program (Pesmaba) at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) on September 10. With the theme ‘Digital Generation, Earth’s Saviors,’ new UMM students are encouraged to become pioneers in efforts to save the planet. At least thousands of new UMM students, known as Gen 24 UMM, participated in this event.

Also present was Brigadier General Ramli SE., representing Major General TNI Rudy Saladin, M.A., Commander of the Brawijaya V Military Command. He acknowledged that UMM has truly demonstrated its commitment to facing future challenges, as evidenced by its progressive ideas in shaping an excellent generation. Not only excelling personally, but also contributing to the surrounding environment.

“We all know that UMM is one of the leading universities, especially now combining the narrative of digital advancement and environmental conservation. There is a strong and stable correlation. Currently, science and technology are developing rapidly, but we must continue to pay attention to environmental preservation efforts,” he said.

Regarding the release of thousands of local zebra doves (geopleia striata), UMM’s Head of Infocom Dr. Ir. Suyatno, M.Si., explained that it was one of UMM’s commitments to preserving the ecosystem and the environment, particularly in supporting the mission to save the planet. These birds are released and allowed to live freely in nature, creating harmony and a green, beautiful, and comfortable environment.

“Before being released, the birds were directly monitored by the UMM Forestry Wildlife Study Group (KSSL). From their diet and other needs to ensure they can live independently in the campus environment,” he explained.

Another interesting highlight is the SWANUMM mascot, symbolizing the campus's atmosphere of achievement and beauty, promoting coexistence with nature and the conservation of endemic animals. This also represents UMM’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability in alignment with the values of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Meanwhile, UMM Rector Prof. Dr. Nazaruddin Malik, SE., M.Si., mentioned several reasons why this year’s Pesmaba campaign focused on saving the planet. This stems from the reality that many natural resources are experiencing a decline in quality, prompting society to take quick and appropriate actions, especially academics and young people who must be prepared to become the planet’s savior generation.

“This Gen-24 is projected as a digital generation that can significantly contribute to efforts to save the planet. Through the smart use of technology, creativity, and a collaborative spirit, this generation is expected to become a driving force in creating a greener and more sustainable future,” he said.

Finally, Nazar, as he is affectionately known, hopes that the Gen 24 will become creative and innovative academics. At the same time, they should aspire to be leaders who can serve society with full dedication and continue to uphold noble values. (Faq/Wil)
