The Mathematics Education Department, FTTE (Faculty of Teacher Training Education) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) again held the Matriks Mathematics Olympiad (MMO) and the National Mathematics Essay Competition (LEMNAS). The two competitions were held on Saturday (13/11) at Campus III UMM. The Mathematics Olympiad Matrix is intended for junior high and senior high school students. Meanwhile, the National Mathematics Essay Competition was held for college students.
Head of Mathematics Education Department, Dr. Moh. Mahfud Effendy, M.Pd., said that this activity was held to foster a love of mathematics. According to him, there is a decline in students' interest and students in Mathematics. "That's where concerns arise about the regeneration of mathematicians," he explained.
In addition, this agenda also includes a variety of mathematics education. The participants were given an overview of mathematics and its different stigma among academics and a stigma in society who view mathematics as rigid and inflexible.
"Hopefully, there will be gatherings and education so that the participants can spread the love of mathematics virus to their friends. In principle, this is a form of our commitment to producing Indonesian human resources who excel in mathematics," he said.
Interestingly, the Mathematics Education Department provides prizes in the form of certificates and coaching money. But they also gave free passes for the UMM Mathematics Education Department for those who won. According to Mahfud, this is a form of appreciation and a forum for the participants' talents.
"Don't let them not be able to continue their education because there are technical problems. The Mathematics Education Department also tries its best to study on time with broad skills. Moreover, it is supported by excellent programs such as Karya Ilmiah Setara Skripsi (KISS), Asistensi Magang Skripsi dan KKN (ASIK Plus), Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM)," he added.
Laisanti Ayu Febriani as the chief executive said that the participants' enthusiasm was high. It was recorded that there were 77 participants at the junior high level and 81 at the high school level. "Alhamdulillah, the participants were very enthusiastic. There are a total of 158 participants for the Mathematical Olympiad Matrix, which will be held this year," she explained.
This Olympics, he continued, is divided into three rounds. Starting with the preliminaries, semifinals, and then the finals. The preliminary round will be held on October 10, 2021, while the semifinal and final will be held on November 13, 2021. Meanwhile, the essay competition is divided into two stages: the selection stage and the final stage, which will also be held on November 13, 2021. (cdr/wil)
