The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) has always been committed to nurturing and preserving the diversity and unity of Indonesia. One of them is reflected in the National Workshop titled  ‘Sintesis Kebhinnekaan untuk Merah Putih' which was held on October 28, 2024. Various groups were present, ranging from cultural experts, figures from various religions, figures from various religious associations, teaching communities, student movement organizations, and so on.

They were present and built a common commitment to diversity with different religious backgrounds. From the Secretary General of the Forum for Interreligious Communication (FKAUB) Malang Raya, Reverend David Tobing, Chairperson of PHDI Malang Istianah, to UMM lecturer Pradana Boy, who is also an International Ambassador for Interreligious Dialogue. This unification of perspectives is an interesting way to commemorate the Indonesian Youth Pledge Day at UMM to strengthen red and white diversity.

This workshop is a series of activities from the Nationality Festival held annually by the UMM. This is a routine program that the White Campus always does as an effort to maintain nationality. It begins in early October to coincide with the Youth Pledge and will continue to involve interfaith leaders from different regions.

Commenting on the agenda, UMM Rector Prof. Dr. Nazaruddin Malik, M.Si. said that humanity is not only made up of differences in gender or age. Cultural and religious backgrounds are also strategic things that need to be considered together. Therefore, the nationality workshop held at UMM plays an important role. Moreover, UMM has indeed ordained itself with the slogan 'From Muhammadiyah for the Nation'. So, the White Campus believes that all people are equal and sit equally as children of the nation.

"The cultural background of each person is crucial, not only in terms of race, but the intersection of religion and culture is also interesting to discuss. Many people say that the D in culture is 'din,' which is Arabic for religion. So this is a sign that religion is inclusive In addition, Nazar believes that this commemoration promotes a passion for patriotism about Indonesia, which is gathered in the House of Diversity. This is not only a celebration, but also a reminder to give birth to pioneer groups that consciously promote diversity in their own style and way. "But do not let these groups create a different taste," he said.

The Sumbawa rector believes that there is a great task for cultural figures such as teachers, religious leaders and cultural workers to reflect culture as a religious concept inherent in all human beings. To help a society that does not differentiate between people in all their cultural characteristics. In this way, every human being will feel comfortable and not alienated even though he is in the midst of different people.

"This is a big task that needs to be done before Indonesia reaches 100 years of age. Before 2045, when Indonesia is predicted to become a prosperous country. Once again, I congratulate you for commemorating the Youth Pledge. Let's strengthen the unity and diversity of Indonesia," he concluded. (wil/ind)
