Senior students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) must be able to create a conducive environment for the development of new students without any violence or hazing practices. This was emphasized by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, M.A.P., in front of thousands of new students during UMM’s New Student Introduction Program (Pesmaba) held at the UMM Dome on September 11.

Muhadjir further explained that today’s society is becoming increasingly complex and full of challenges, making higher education crucial in shaping resilient individuals. According to him, the "White Campus" is an ideal place for students to develop themselves not only academically but also spiritually and socially. UMM has consistently instilled the value that those who are beneficial are those who bring goodness wherever they are.

"UMM students are encouraged to become individuals who are respected both locally and internationally. This is supported by UMM’s flagship programs, such as the Center of Excellence (CoE), which focuses on developing creative and innovative skills. Additionally, there are various academic and non-academic development programs that students can pursue," said the Chairperson of UMM's Daily Board of Trustees (BPH).

He also reminded senior students to create a conducive environment for the growth of new students, free from violence and hazing practices. According to him, seniors must set a good example for the newly joined members of the "Red Jacket" family of the White Campus.

"The role of senior students on campus is also very important. Seniors are expected not only to be mentors but also to serve as role models for younger students. With the support of wise senior students, I hope it will accelerate the development of UMM students, making them a generation capable of facing global challenges effectively," he added.

On the other hand, UMM Rector, Prof. Dr. Nazaruddin Malik, M.Si., emphasized that the White Campus always prepares its students to be resilient individuals in terms of knowledge, skills, and spirituality. Through the Center of Excellence (CoE), UMM stresses the importance of education that produces excellent human resources with innovative and creative skills. The CoE is designed as a center of excellence that combines a knowledge base with specific skills according to students' interests and talents. This program aims to equip students with problem-solving abilities to face societal challenges.

"The CoE program at UMM is interdisciplinary, allowing students to choose programs beyond their major. This demonstrates UMM’s commitment to accommodating individual student development through a multidisciplinary approach based on their interests and passions, implemented through real-world practice," said Nazar.

He also revealed that this year, UMM will introduce basic digital education to all students as well as an SDGs program focused on climate education and responsibility toward the Earth. Additionally, UMM students will be offered lessons in Indonesian, English, Arabic, and one other language of their choice as a communication skillset to prepare for an increasingly dynamic future.
