The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) has been entrusted to host the Socialization of the Global Unified Hijri Calendar (KHGT) and Calculation Training organized by Majelis Tarjih and Tajdid (MTT) of Muhammadiyah East Java Region (PWM). The event, held on August 24-25, attracted hundreds of participants from various districts and cities across East Java.
The major event was officially opened by the Secretary of PWM East Java, Prof. Dr. Biyanto, M.Ag. He reiterated the development of KHGT, which began with discussions of organizational documents since the 47th Muhammadiyah Congress in Makassar in 2015. This was further solidified at the 48th Muhammadiyah Congress in Solo, Surakarta, in 2022, and was revisited during the Muhammadiyah National Consolidation (Konsolnas) in July.
“From the results of the 9 resolutions of National Consolidation Muhammadiyah, it was conveyed that KHGT and our obligation to socialize it are crucial and need to be continuously followed up. This is vital for reaffirming the spirit of the principles in the advancing Islam manifesto. One of these principles is to develop tajdid and ijtihad, which can be realized through KHGT,” he said.
He hopes that the two-day forum, discussions, and training will provide a deeper understanding of KHGT and calculation methods. It is also an effort to support Islamic civilization both now and in the future.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ahmad Zuhdi Dh, MA, Chairman of MTT PWM East Java, expressed appreciation and gratitude for the collaboration between PWM East Java and UMM in realizing this agenda. He explained that the process of innovating KHGT has been challenging. Many obstacles had to be overcome, and extensive rational considerations were needed to reach agreements, such as determining time based on the sighting of the new moon. He hopes that participants will first understand KHGT and its uniqueness before presenting it to the Muhammadiyah community.
At the same event, UMM Vice Rector V, Prof. Dr. Tri Sulistyaningsih, M.Si, highlighted Muhammadiyah’s commitment to progress, innovation, and strategic thinking. The implementation of KHGT is seen as highly strategic and could minimize issues causing debates in the process. UMM warmly welcomes this socialization activity related to KHGT, despite potential skepticism from some quarters. (Din/Wil/Fajr)
