Often students need clarification about developing their interests and competencies. Seeing this, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Aquaculture Study Program implemented the Indonesian Extra Student Competence (KESI), which introduced the Prawn and Koi Fish Professional Class. Attended by hundreds of students from 17 schools in East Java, this agenda was held on November 12, 2022.
Opening the program, Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M.Si, Vice Rector I of UMM, explained that KESI aims to provide competence and introduction for students to the world of work and industry. Not only based on theory, but participants also went to the applied laboratory in each Center of Excellence (CoE) so that they could enjoy doing practices, starting from nurseries to marketing water products.
"Of course, I hope my friends from SMA, MA, and SMK can learn a lot at UMM. Especially through KESI Shrimp and Koi Fish. That way, younger siblings can improve their skills according to their passions and aspects of interest," said Syamsul
Meanwhile, the Head of the UMM Aquaculture Study Program, Dr. Hany Handajani, S.Pi, M.Sc., said this program was initially implemented online due to the pandemic. Then it grew and was held offline by inviting hundreds of students to the white campus. According to him, the participants seemed enthusiastic about following each process and providing material.
Furthermore, KESI aims to increase students' competence, especially in things they never find in school. "We have also provided tutors from industry friends and lecturers. So, we hope that students are interested in getting involved in fisheries. Moreover, Indonesia has a wide area of sea and water," he said.
One of the teachers who showed appreciation was Ilmin Syakir, M.Pd., a companion teacher from the Ar-Rahmah Islamic Boarding School, Malang Regency. According to him, this program can provide new insights for his students, invite brainstorming about the world of fisheries, and be able to motivate them.
"This activity is a new competence for our students. It is also a provision for them to enter and develop themselves in the lecture world. It can even be a provision to build a business in the field of shrimp and koi fish. I hope that programs like this can continue to be run by the UMM White Campus so that the benefits provided will also expand," he concluded. (cdr/haq/wil)
