The Communication Studies Department of University of Muhammadyah Malang (UMM) held the colloquium entitled “Refreshing the Research Methodology”, Monday (19/10) at the hall of Public Administration Bureau (BAU) UMM. The colloquium, which goes by theme “The Analysis of Text of Media in Communication Studies”, invited researcher and media consultant, Agus Sudibyo, M.Si.
According to Agus, the condition of the media is now convergent where between printed, electronic, and cyber media has been connected each other. “This phenomena is caused by the massiveness of internet user. Only in 2015, half of Indonesia population or 137 billion people are using internet,” said Agus.
He also stated that, 70 of 137 billion people are active user of internet, and 50 of 70 billion of the active internet user accessed internet using their smartphones. “As we aware or not, this online media has been becoming a big market. This causes the degradation of people watching their TVs and reading the newspaper. It’s because all of them is accessible on our smartphone,” asserted by Agus.
Some of this phenomena, in is opinion, can be developed and followed-up by the students through their skripsi or essays. He believed that these issues are important to be studied due to its lack of the online media law. “We can conduct a study of the consumption behavior of people while consuming the media, study of citizen journalism, the journalistic etiquette of online media, and many more as I explained before,” said Agus.
The Dean of Faculty of Social and Political Science (FISIP) UMM, Dr. Asep Nurjaman, M.Si welcomed the event held by Communication Studies of UMM. “The result of this colloquium can broaden our knowledge, especially in communication which is really helpful for your essay,” he said briefly.
