At the end of 2017, Taekwondo University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) incised achievement. This December, UMM won the prestigious event which is UGM Taekwondo Championship 2017. 4 medals successfully gotten by UMM consisting of 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal, and 2 bronze medals. Besides, other medals were also collected by UMM through winning some competitions such as Malang Taekwondo Open 2017 held at State Polytechnic of Malang in January. Taekwondo team won 3 gold medals and 2 silver medals.Two months later on March 2017, Taekwondo team won 4 medals at “East Java Taekwondo Championship” in Soekarno-Hatta Gymnasium, Blitar
Although Taekwondo team had achieved many achievements, it does not make them complacent about their success. In April, Taekwondo UMM joined “Taekwondo Rector Cup Competition” at Pembangunan Nasional Veteran University in Surabaya. They gave their best performance and won 16 medals consisting of 6 gold medals, 6 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals.
The Chief of Taekwondo UMM, Yolan Dwi Frianto, said that the key of success are strong willingness and hard work. It is implemented by having discipline habit and routine exercise that has been scheduled. Frianto said, ”Giving motivation is important especially if we are going to compete. Missing one competition, it means we lose. Besides, we need to have a good time management for taking a rest, attending classes, and exercising”.
Taekwondo UMM is opened for members who do not have any basic in Taekwondo. All members will be trained by seniors who have already got Black Belt. Meanwhile, Taekwondo UMM targets to join at least five competitions in a year in order to keep the achievement. The Chairman of Achievement Training Taekwondo UMM, Muhammad Kautsar said, “Perhaps, there are four or five competitions we join in a year. Thank God, the achievements are more than what we targeted”. Kausar is so thankful and is proud of the achievements achieved so far. He hopes that those achievements can attract the attention of UMM new students. Kautsar who is also a student of Civil Engineering said, “ This can be a way to introduce our campus and tell people that UMM has many achievements, one of them is Taekwondo”. (lus)
