The pain around the nail and reddish swelling that leads to infection are symptoms of cantengan disease. Regarding this matter, a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), dr. Rahma Sabila Rindardi explained that cantengan or ingrowing nail is a nail that grows into the skin.
This disease is usually experienced mainly by children and the elderly. Children usually suffer from it because the tissues around their nails are still soft. Whereas in older people, due to limited mobility and vision. Therefore, it is more difficult to care for and cut nails.
"If you look at the data from the Ministry of Health, about 25% of those who come to the doctor experience cantengan," explained the woman who is familiarly called Bela.
Bela gives some tips to prevent the occurrence of cantengan. First, don't cut your nails too short. Cutting your nails incorrectly, such as being too short or penetrating to the edge of the nail, can increase the risk of cantengan. Secondly, the nail scissors used for cutting must be sharp. If they are not sharp, we will tend to pull on the nail about to be cut. This can create wounds or microlesions around the nail tissue.
Third, try to use comfortable footwear that is tight enough. Wearing too-tight footwear can pressure the toenails, causing them to grow into the skin. Another factor that can cause cantengan is minor trauma to the foot.
"Foot trauma usually happens from wearing improper shoes or footwear. It is also due to running or doing activities that are too strenuous," she said.
Bela also provided some tips when you have already suffered from cantengan. Several things can be done to reduce the risk. First, take painkillers that can be purchased at the nearest pharmacy. If there has been an infection in the nail area, the cantengan wound can be treated with antibiotic ointment. In addition, soaking the feet in warm water can also relieve pain.
If there is infection to the extent of suppuration, it is strongly recommended to see a general practitioner immediately and have the nail extraction done. It is important to note that if the wound is not treated properly, it can lead to complications.
"The complications can be widespread and cause severe infection of the surrounding skin tissue," she concluded. (Put/Dev/Wil)
