Thousands of students entered the Dome of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) to take part in the Foreign Language for Specific Purpose (FLSP) graduation ceremony. Unlike the usual graduation, the agenda held on March 8, 2023, was a ceremonial day to celebrate students' success in completing the process of learning English at UMM.
Interestingly, it was not only the awarding of certificates; various performances and a series of competitions also entertained students. Starting with the band, singing competitions in English and Mandarin, and storytelling.
The agenda was also enlivened by a bazaar consisting of business units and student businesses. Uniquely, sellers and buyers must use English in the buying and selling process. This is an excellent opportunity for students to practice their English.
This year's GK FLSP has the theme 'Grasp the Culture, Avoid Language Stutter.' According to the chief executive, Roykhanan, this theme was created to encourage young people to be able to communicate well. Mainly, it is through the language. With a good speech, communication between people will be more accessible, even if they come from different countries or regions.

"Not only the language, but UMM students are also encouraged to learn other cultures. Therefore, they can also learn tolerance and understand others, " he added.
UMM Deputy Chancellor I, Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M.Sc., will award those who get the best grades at the university level. Syamsul, as he is called, emphasized that English is critical because it is an international language. Without it, students will have difficulties, especially if they continue or get a scholarship abroad.
Students from the UMM class of 2021 attended the graduation ceremony. Especially in the Faculty of Islamic Religion, they are students of class 2020. These students have participated at the FLSP for one year, declared victorious, and graduated. In addition to the previous, they were also required to take a post-test as an evaluation and see how much improvement had been achieved.
Lastly, Vice Rector III, Dr. Nur Subeki, M.T., also encourages the White Campus students to master English, especially in an era full of collaborations. "If we can't speak English, of course, collaboration with foreign parties will stagnate or even cease to exist. So, to bridge communication in the international world, English has an important role," he said. (put/*/wil)
