Another brilliant achievement was achieved by the students of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) in sports. Most recently, the UMM taekwondo team managed to bring home ten medals at the East Java Provincial Championship (Kajurprov) in 2022. This championship was held at Gor Mastrip, Probolinggo City, early last April.
One of the UMM team members, Galih Pradipta Rahmandani, said that the provincial level competition was attended by 1,264 participants from various regions in East Java. In the competition, UMM sent the 13 best athletes. In the Kajurprov competition, three categories were contested, namely kyorugi, Poomsae, and speed kick. Although there were three categories, the UMM team only participated in the kyorugi and Poomsae categories.

"Alhamdulillah, the UMM team managed to win many medals in the two categories. In the men's poomsae category, UMM managed to get one gold medal. In the women's poomsae category, they won two gold and one silver medal. For the kyorugi category, UMM won six champions, namely, second place in the women's U-57 kg class, second place in the men's U-63kg class, first place in the men's U-58kg class, first place in the men's U-54kg class, and second place in the men's U-54 kg class. Men's U-87kg and the first winner are U-68kg men," said the Taekwondo Student Activity Unit (UKM) head.
Even though he has won many championships, Galih, as he is familiarly called, admitted that his team did not have a long time to prepare for the competition. The total time ready for the Kajurprov competition is only three weeks. During that period, the UMM Taekwondo team conducted intermittent training sessions between one to two exercises per day.

"To improve the skills of team members, we also conduct friendly matches with other universities before the Kajurprov takes place. The toughest obstacle we faced in its preparation was keeping the athletes in top condition. This is because many athletes are sick before the competition," said the Psychology Faculty student.
The last child of two siblings admitted that he was proud of the achievement of taekwondo in Kajurprov 2022. Although he faced several obstacles initially, Galih said that he was still optimistic that UMM taekwondo would bring home many medals.
"I hope that the athletes who have won the championship are not easily satisfied with the achievements that have been obtained. Hopefully, UMM athletes can further develop their potential and achievements and maintain good performance in the regional, national, and international arenas," he said. (apg/shi/wil)
