The number of traffic accidents is increasing every year. According to Kominfo, at least three people die every hour due to driving accidents. Especially at night, there are many incidents that happen to motorcyclists. This is due to the lack of lighting and driver alertness.
Bagus Dwi Bagaskara, an Industrial Engineering Student at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) also felt the same way. He almost had an accident while driving at night due to lack of lighting.
Based on this experience, Bagus came up with the idea to make a smart helmet that can increase driving safety. Assisted by nine other friends, he started working on the smart helmet. The smart helmet initially had many supporting features, but for reasons of weight and flexibility, the features embedded in the smart helmet were simplified. There are at least four main features in this work. They are a wireless light system or hazard light, anti-theft system, anti-dew, and solar panel charging.
"If developed with many features, it is feared that it will increase the weight of the helmet itself, and damage the image of using the helmet itself," he said.
The main feature of the smart helmet is a wireless light system embedded in the side of the helmet as a hazard light. This light is energized by a solar panel and can be used for 8 hours.
He added that the embedded solar panel was deliberately installed flexibly so as not to leave a heavy impression. Also as an effort to pay attention to the appearance of the helmet itself. The 5-volt solar panel will charge the wireless light.

Another interesting feature is the anti-dew that is embedded in the inner visor of the helmet's windshield. This feature will help users avoid condensation when it rains.
"This feature has actually been widely used for cars, but not many people know about it. For this reason, I also embed this feature to help motorcyclists when it rains," he added.
The many features do not make them neglect the weight of the helmet in accordance with national standards. Their helmet is still fairly light at just 1.5 kg. 0.1 kg lighter than the maximum weight.
Finally, Bagus hopes that this work can contribute and reduce the number of accidents. It is also a motivation for young people to continue developing their work.
"I also aspire that one day our product can be mass produced and used by motorists," he concluded. (cdr/tri/wil)
