Proud news came again from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). This time, it was the turn of its faculty of law students who succeeded in winning the third place in a national constitutional debate competition. This championship was achieved in mid-February at State University of Gorontalo.
One of the team members, Saiful Risky, assessed that this achievement could not be separated from the support from the UMM campus. The lecturers and seniors provide a lot of input and evaluation, so they can finally find out the flaws and fix them quickly. Moreover, the three of them are also members of the Semi Autonomous Institution of Community Research and the Debate Faculty of Law of UMM.
"There is a lot of support from UMM and we are grateful for that. This is not an easy path either. Before participating in the national competition, we had to compete at the faculty level by selecting who is the most suitable and has the skills to be able to make UMM proud in the arena," he said.
A series of topics were presented in the debate competition. It started from discussions related to the position of chairman of a political party for two periods, legalizing marriage in one office, and other interesting friends. Whether liking it or not, he and his team had to read a lot and analyze the problems presented.
“The topic is interesting to discuss and debate. Whether we like it or not, we have to prepare a legal basis and clear arguments. Thank God, we can be in the third position," Saiful said.
He said, even though they had to go through many difficulties, they were grateful to be able to compete in the debate competition. Primarily, they can have many new acquaintances, receive new knowledge, and perceive new insights and experiences. Through that way, they can improve their quality.
Risky thinks that debate competitions can measure students’ capacity and capability. Also, it can also hone his knowledge and level of understanding, Then he can compare it with other students’ knowledge from various universities throughout Indonesia.

Risky was not alone. In fact, the third place trophy was successfully achieved together with two of his best friends: Cintya Mei Puspitasari and Moh. Riski Fadjar Romadhani. He also invited other young people to dare to compete. According to him, great things happen to those who do not stop believing, trying, learning, and being grateful. People who fall and get up are stronger than people who never try.
"No need to be ashamed to try. Students must have the courage to go forward, so they can know how far their capabilities are. Even if they are good and win the championship, that is a great bonus,” he concluded. (imh/wil)
