Not easily giving up and always trying to be a form of responsibility for the dreams that you want to achieve and fight for. This is what is applied by students of the Pharmacy Study Program at Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM) who successfully won the best group presentation award in the National Student Science Week (Pimnas) which was held last October. They are Sonya Dzakiyah Zayyantri as chairperson, Putri Setia Ningsih, and Muhammad Nasir Falah.

Interestingly, in the process of participating in Pimnas activities, two members of the group had already graduated first, leaving Sonya to struggle. Related to that, Sonya said that she was hesitant to go to this Pimnas event. But considering that the other two members always supported her and wanted to accompany her, she finally continued her struggle. Even though she presented her scientific work alone, she did not feel alone because two of her members were always encouraging her.

The scientific work she brought was related to the construction of water installations through fog or air for the future. According to her, in the future there will be a possibility that water will decrease until it potentially runs out. Especially considering the number of people on Earth is increasing over time. So, she wishes that their idea can help provide a solution to the water problem.

Although there are a number of groups discussing the water aspect, only her team has the unique idea of building a water installation from the fog. This put them as the only group to address water issues with a new and unique method. “This idea was actually inspired by the beetles that live in the largest desert in Africa called the Namib Desert. Especially when we realized that the animal can survive well in the heat of the desert. We ended up doing further research on the beetle's survival system to get its water supply,” she said.

They eventually discovered that these beetles can survive by standing at a 40-degree angle. On its back, there are hydrophobic and hydrophilic bumps to collect water from the mist. From there, they had the idea to adapt the shape of the nets that have a pattern according to the wings of the beetle.

“ Later on, we will also utilize electrical energy through solar light panels and also add an air turbine to maximize the process.” She added.

She was also very happy to receive an award in this prestigious competition. In addition, there is full support from UMM, Student Affairs, and also the supervisor, which makes them able to survive until the Pimnas event is over. She wishes that in the future, more and more young people will be able to come up with brilliant ideas for human progress, especially in Indonesia. (zaf/wil/Ind)
