When it comes to energy-efficient cars, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) relates to it. A team of UMM always competes in such competitions nationally or internationally to gain a championship. Most recently, the LSO Mekatronic of UMM delegated two of its teams again to compete for the title at the international event, Shell Eco-Marathon Asia Pacific 2023, primarily in the urban electric and proto-gasoline classes. The prestigious event, which was held again at the Mandalika International Circuit, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, was attended by more than 80 teams from 14 countries in Asia Pacific.
The team members, the majority of whom are Mechanical Engineering students, have also prepared themselves in advance. The Chairwoman of the electric urban team, Evita Leninda, explained that the two groups were 98% ready to compete in Mandalika. Research and training are done almost every day to prepare everything. "One obstacle we faced was the engine aspect, which we have overcome. How to exert great power but with minimum energy. We hope to win first place in this championship," she added.

The same thing was also conveyed by the advisor of the LSO Mekatronic UMM, Drs. Mohammad Jufri, ST, MT. According to him, the UMM team is well-prepared. It is not only the car but also the driver who has been familiar with the related machine. The making of the two cars took about six months. Interestingly, they also got a lot of sponsorship for car components and frames from many parties.
He explained that in this event, the Mekatronic UMM car had to cover a distance of 12 km in 27 minutes. "Because this competition is assessed from fuel economy, there is a fuel-efficient target that must be achieved. Alhamdulillah, from frequent training, both cars have reached their fuel saving targets. The electric urban car achieves 200 km/kwh and the proto gasoline car achieves 1000 km/l," said Jufri.
He states several things must be considered for the vehicle to remain economical. These include a lightweight car body, vehicle aerodynamics, and fuel consumption that the driver must pay attention to. The driver must understand the car's characteristics and the circuit well so as not to waste too much fuel.
"The hope is of course to get the best results. Because in the previous year, the UMM team had entered the top 4 of the Shell Eco Marathon Asia Pacific 2022. So this year the target is to win first place. In addition, last year they also won first place in the urban electric class and third place in the proto gasoline class in the Energy Efficient Car Contest (KMHE) competition," explained Jufri.
On the other hand, the Rector of UMM, Prof. Dr. Fauzan M.Pd., appreciated the car work of the students who will compete in Mandalika. "The students who compete are not just invited, they have gone through various processes. I am proud of the mekatronic team that is able to show its extraordinary achievements to date. The competition is proof that we have been taken into account at the Asia Pacific level," he said.

He says student participation in a competition is crucial to foster a competitive spirit. The White Campus—UMM always supports all potential student activities that lead to self-development. "The hope is of course to win. If you don't win, then don't despair. You still have a lot of time and opportunities. Defeat is a form of learning for self-maturation, but make the most of this opportunity," Fauzan said. (imh/zak/wil)
