University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) students made another achievement. This time, two International Relations and Psychology study program students, Hamim Faqih and Ferdy Aprizal, won second place in the National Debate Competition. The event, held under a British parliamentary system, was held at the Rhetoric Festival in mid-July.

The student, often called Hamim, said the debate had the theme "Speaker Conception for Craving Innovation." His team faced a series of university representatives from various regions in Indonesia. He admitted that there were no significant obstacles. One of the things that made it difficult was the network problem that had been interrupted several times.

"Because this competition is held online, networking is crucial. I am very grateful and very happy for the achievements that have been obtained. Moreover, this is the first time to participate in the Indonesian Student Debate Competition (KDMI) with this system," he said.

Hamim explained that this British parliamentary system has certain stages and assessments. There are three preliminary rounds. In each round, there are four different teams. The scoring system uses victory points. So the team that wants to qualify must win two matches in three preliminary.

"While the value will undoubtedly be taken based on the correlation of arguments related to the motion or theme given. Even with a logical match that will determine whether the value obtained is good or not, "said Hamim.

Meanwhile, Ferdy said that he and Hamim had thoroughly prepared long ago. Moreover, they are also members of the Student Activity Unit (UKM) of the English Debating Society-International Language Forum (EDS-ILF). It benefits them because many seniors provide input and strategies to win.

"Every two times a week, we train our critical thinking by inviting other university teams to spar. On the other hand, we also learn from failures in the previous races to be more optimal," he said.

According to Ferdy, yesterday's competition was quite lively and exciting. The UMM team had to face many tough opponents. Previously, they had also won a series of rounds, such as the national debate competition at the Polinema in 2021. "This is one of the many races we want to win. Hopefully, we can improve our skills and make the campus proud in the next event," he hoped. (cdr/zak/wil)
