Becoming an Influencer or content creator is now a new profession that is loved by Millennials. Although it is still being debated whether Influencers are a profession, they certainly have a strong influence on society. They, who are dominated by Millennials, have their way of expressing work and making real changes.
This potential was captured by the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), which at the time of admission of new students opened a special pathway for influencers. For YouTubers with a minimum subscriber of 5,000 and Celebgram with a minimum follower of 10,000 will be selected without an admission test. Of course, the process is not at random, first selected through the mechanism of skills testing.
UMM Deputy Rector I Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin MSi emphasized that the influencers referred to here were influential Youtuber, Celebgram, and Celebtwit who were creative, educative, and positive. "Of course we pay attention to the content," he stressed. Registrants, he continued, simply display the official YouTube and Instagram account links to be verified by the admissions committee.
Another consideration for UMM to open this pathway is to give appreciation and accommodate the creative millennial generation on social media. As is well known, there are currently various forms of academic achievement and especially non-academic achievement. "Currently there are many young people who are creative in creating content and giving positive viruses to the public," said Syamsul.
But, Syamsul understands, there is a variety of content out there. There is positive or negative content. However, the UMM PMB team had its criteria for this path. "So, UMM still has good criteria. Not just any Celebgram is accepted, not just any YouTuber is accepted. Of course, we have criteria that will be verified by the PMB team," he said.
This influencer pathway is open to all majors at UMM, except for the Faculty of Medicine and Fikes (Faculty of Health Sciences). Syamsul did not dismiss, among the influencers, some have fake followers. "UMM is very careful. We have a team that can later track the authenticity of their participation or their followers and subscribers," Syamsul said.
The registration which included a non-academic achievement track was open until April 25, 2020. UMM did not limit the type of influencers. So, it can be a beauty vlogger, food vlogger, traveler, writer, and others who can join this path. "All fields. The point is creative, positive, and educative. Well, young people like that who want to be accommodated by UMM," said Syamsul. (* / apg)
