Celebrating independence can be done in various ways. One of the unique events was held by the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) through the UMM Fashion Show and Fashion Kids. The event, which was held on August 16-17, was colored by various costumes and traditional clothes from dozens of participants. They showed off their clothes and posed at the GKB I bridge UMM White Campus.
Meanwhile, UMM Fashion Kids is held for elementary school (SD) children. Dozens of elementary school children from Malang competed with each other to get prizes. Meanwhile, the UMM Fashion Show was intended for UMM academics who wanted to appear in their best costumes. Participants can register individually or in pairs.
One of the judges of the Fashion Show, dr. Yulia Merita Putri explained that this activity was more interesting because it was also enlivened by international students from various parts of the world. The enthusiasm of the participants was also very high. It can be seen from the costume knick-knacks they display during the event.
"The participants look very serious about taking part in this competition. They wear traditional clothes from various regions. Counted. There are almost 100 participants who are competing," he added.
Furthermore, Putri, as she is known, said that this fashion show helps introduce the culture of each region to a broad audience. Even as an effort to preserve traditional clothing, which is now rarely worn except during events.
"Thanks to this event, foreign students know the traditional clothes of the Indonesian people. They can even name each of the traditional clothes they represent. Maybe now it's only limited to fashion, but in the future, it will spread to other cultures, so it's more varied," said the lecturer from Jember.
One of the accompanying teachers from SD, Dian Ulfatun Nur, conveyed the same thing. He considered UMM Fashion Kids to be a place to foster children's self-confidence. Even with the development of their hidden interests and talents and their courage.
She considered that the existing competition made children who used to be shy inevitably have to become confident. Regarding the clothes worn, Dian admitted that the school and parents worked together in preparing them.
"So, the parents and I discussed what regional clothes the children would wear. I also appreciate UMM's routine activities. Fashion Kids competition, coloring competitions, yells, and others. Moreover, for the last two years, it was canceled because of the pandemic," explained the teacher at SDN 1 Ampeldento Karangploso.
He hopes that this series of competitions can continue. You can even add other branches to make it livelier. Even the addition of participants completed the contest even more exciting. (cdr/*wil)
