The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is active in various beneficial activities, including activities related to creating environmental sustainability in the academic world. This commitment is proven by UMM's participation in UI Greenmetrics since 2020.
"Universities should not only focus on the teaching and learning process but also create conditions that support learning and a green campus. UI Greenmetric is a world ranking that sets infrastructure standards and actions towards sustainable infrastructure around the world," said UMM Assistant Rector for International Accreditation, Suparto, M.Pd.

Suparto mentioned that there are 900 universities around the world that have joined the program. In addition, there are six main indicators in this program, including environmental and infrastructure aspects, energy and climate change, and waste management. Likewise with transportation education and research. To achieve these indicators and become a sustainable university, the White Campus has also implemented various programs.
"As a campus, we have conducted research and service related to environmental sustainability, provided facilities for disabilities, reduced parking areas by establishing multi-story parking, and even provided sterile ready-to-drink water at several points on campus. Other things such as operating electric cars as public transportation, integrated TPS and micro-hydro power plants, solar panels, and biogas have also been done," Suparto explained.
The UMM lecturer also said that the White Campus has also had many discussions related to the best practices with various institutions. UMM's involvement in UI Greenmetric can also be seen concretely through intellectual resources, infrastructure, and the ability to carry out innovative research in fields related to the environment and sustainability. The involvement of the younger generation, including UMM students, is also a strategic support. One way is to include sustainability in the curriculum and promote sustainable behavior.
"We are certainly continuing to promote energy and water conservation, waste recycling, and eco-friendly transportation. Especially considering the many environmental and climate change issues that affect all aspects of life. This can be seen from the warmer air temperature, disruption of the hydrological cycle, and the rise of hydrometeorological disasters in various parts of the world," he said.

UMM also encourages its students to participate in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including a green campus. For example, by organizing sustainable education, sustainable research, community partnerships, and environmental conservation. As well as inclusive development and equality and inclusion.
"Through commitment to the SDGs, UMM is not only a higher education institution that excels academically but also a pioneer in the change towards a more sustainable and inclusive society. With these concrete steps, UMM plays a role in maintaining the economic welfare of the community, the sustainability of social life, the quality of the environment, and inclusive development, and strives to leave a better world for future generations," said the person in charge of the program Prof. Dr. Ir. Sujono, M.Kes. (*/Put)
