Potato Seeds of UMM Develops New Technology (Photo: Special) |
The academic community of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang continues to develop constant innovation. The business unit Potato Seeds UMM recently developed a new technology in the production process of potato seeds. The invention was developed by the manager of Potato Seeds UMM, Dr. Ir. Syarif Husen, M.P. Further, the Temporary Immersion Bioreactor (TIB) is a brand-new in Vitro Culture, especially for producing potato seeds.
Indonesia has never implemented this technology to produce seed potatoes as plantlets. In addition, this TIB technology is significantly more effective and superior for making potatoes than conventional methods or solid culture media.

Syarif explained that implementing TIB, potato seed plantlets are available in three weeks. The conventional method, on the other hand, takes 1.5 months longer. Other beneficial aspects of the method are that the seed plantlets have resilient and green physical characteristics, substantial stems, and a high success rate of acclimatization.
"By utilizing this technology, we acquire more time efficient. Additionally, we don't need a lot of human resources because it is all automated. Such as irradiation and nutrition, which can be regulated with technology," said Syarif.
Interestingly, the business unit Potato Seeds UMM contributes to the government by providing and producing huge-scale seeds, especially in East Java. "As a result, we assist the government in producing pre-existing potato seeds. We obtained a delegation of legality for the Granola Lembang potato seed variety by The Agricultural Instrument Standardization Agency (BSIP) for Vegetables Corps, and the Variety of Granola Kembang by the East Java BSIP," he stated.
In 2017, the Campus Intellectual Product Business Development Program began seed potato production. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology afterward awarded further funding in 2023 through the Campus Business Development Program for product downstream and commercialization.
Unit Potato Seeds UMM, in fact, was officially established in Sengkaling through the Rector's Decree in 2022. The East Java Seed Supervision and Certification Centre (BPSB) granted this business unit a certificate of competence as a seed producer and distributor in the same year.
Syarif desires that the TIB technology for seed potatoes be able to contribute to ensuring the national demand for seed potatoes. Therefore, it is easily obtained by potato farmers. A further advantage is that the price is relatively more affordable. (fajr/dev/wil)
