UNIVERSITY of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) was officially launched the establishment of ASEAN Studies Center (PSA), Wednesday (14/12). This event was done to follow a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which was signed by UMM Vice Rector, Prof Dr Syamsul Arifin, MSi, and the Director General for ASEAN Cooperation Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jose Tavares, in Jakarta,
Thursday (1/12).
The signing would underpin the cooperation of both parties in carrying out various activities related to cooperation of ASEAN. Some of cooperation would be done in the field of education, research, scientific assessments, and community service. The scope was among education, training, workshops, seminars, research, publication and publishing academic works to promote ASEAN cooperation further.
By establishing UMM PSA, it was now formed 34 PSA scattered in various universities in Indonesia. In his speech, UMM Rector, Fauzan declared that, the most important of the opening is the focus which would be developed. "Although PSA UMM is not the first, the problem is not in order, but what field that will be appointed and can be a real contribution to promote ASEAN together," he said.
Lecturer in International Relations program (HI), Dyah Estu Kurniawati SSos MSI, who is also a seminar speaker stated that, one of the most important points in ASEAN cooperation is creating a network. This is because Indonesian population occupied 40 percent of ASEAN population, but the Indonesia competitiveness of is relatively low.
"Learning and networking are essential point in order to face the economic openness, political, security, and social culture within the ASEAN Community ongoing. Therefore, the formation of PSA in UMM has become one of the steps to prepare of, "he said.
General Directorate of ASEAN Cooperation, Ashariyadi stated that, there are three things that will be development pillar of ASEAN, which were political, economic, and socio-cultural. The launch of the UMM PSA was rated strategic by Ashariyadi.
"UMM is a strategic campus which already globalized. There is no doubt to open the PSA on this campus, "he said.
PSA launching was coupled with a seminar entitled "The Development of ASEAN Community Cooperation: Opportunities and Challenges For Region" held at UMM Dome Theater. The General Secretary of ASEAN Cooperation, Ashariyadi, and Lecturer in International Relations UMM, Dyah Estu Kurniawati, were presented as speakers. The event was attended by more than 300 participants from various groups, including government agencies, autonomous Muhammadiyah organization, perpetrators of; Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (UMKM), PSA representatives of universities in East Java, students, and UMM academicians.
