99 particants whose background were Elementary School Teachers (PGSD) joined Professional Teacher Education and Training (PLPG) which was held by Teacher Certification Program (PSG) Rayon 144 University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) October 6 to 14 2016. The participants came from some regions in East Java.
In Indonesia, there were only 15 colleges that had authority conducting that certification program. The Dean of Faculty Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UMM, Dr.Poncojari Wahyono, M.Kes explained that, UMM was the only private university (PTS) which was mandated by the Minister of Education and Culture to conduct PLPG.
UMM and other 14 universities also held this program, which were Syah Kuala University, State University of Medan, State University of Padang, State University of Jakarta, Education University of Indonesia, State University of Yogyakarta, State University of Semarang, Sebelas Maret University, State University of Surabaya, State University of Malang, Jember University, Ganesha Education University, Cendrawasih University, and State University of Makasar.
For the implementation, Poncojari Said that, PSG UMM partnered with two other universities which were Islam University of Malang (Unisma) and Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo.
At the opening which took place in UMM Inn hotel on Thursday (6/10), Rector of UMM, Fauzan asked the participants of PLPG to be able able to find problem in the certification implementation which had been done before. According to the research, the certification program years before was done only in 9 days, and it has not correlation to what is expected”. Fauzan added.
Fauzan admitted that teachers who had been certified only improved in one aspect, which was their prosperity. But, other aspects such as academic performance, pedagogy, and social were not improved yet, even there was no significance improvement. For example, in 2014, there were 374 divorce cases in Malang as like Fauzan mentioned. Many of them (who got divorce) were teachers.
“this condition cannot be constantly happening. We hope that you already had an intention to improve your competence capacity, intellectual, and social. Those things are needed to improve the quality and competency of graduates we teach”.
Therefore, Fauzan hoped that, teachers who had been certified could be agent of change.” Teachers not only transfer knowledge but also become role model for the students”. (acs/han)
