UMM Launched Nutraceutical Study Program Soon

University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) through the Directorate of Vocational Education and Training will soon open a new study program, namely Nutraceuticals. In this study program, students will be equipped with methodological skills and computation as well as practical laboratories to work effectively and efficiently through direct involvement in solving problems needed in research and the food industry and medicine.

 
"The curriculum of Nutrition Study Program is specifically designed to solve contemporary problems and to produce innovations in the field of Nutraceuticals with supporting information technology, as well as food safety management systems," said Dr. Tulus Winarsunu, M.Sc., Director of the Directorate of Vocational Education and Training of UMM in the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) for the opening of Nutraceuticals Study Program at Rayz Hotel UMM, Saturday (7/3).
 
Nutraceuticals Study Program is a strong foundation of knowledge and understanding and application of science to contribute to the food industry and multinational medicine. "Competency of the graduates is targeted, including being able to design food and medicine production processes based on the application of technology-based food processing principles in an effective, efficient, and precise to produce products with the right standard," continued Tulus.

Besides, being able to design the development of quality food products and medicines that are quality, safe, nutritious and beneficial to health, and based on the principles of food science and nutraceuticals; Able to research fusion food processing operations following the characteristics of food ingredients, to produce safe and quality food along with the food production chain and can provide additional food value.
 
UMM Rector Dr. Fauzan, M, Pd in his remarks mentioned that UMM's responsibility was not just developing education, but also developing dimensions of life that were beneficial to society. "Therefore what we do (establishing a new study program) is an inseparable part of the mission that we do. So our hope, this program will be successfully conducted. If this is realized it will benefit everyone, "said Fauzan. 
 
Indonesia itself has the potential for natural resources called biological wealth. There are at least 30,000 useful plant species. All we have to do is approach the skill, where the herbal medicine we consume is becoming valuable. From this, it was hoped that students from the UMM Nutraceuticals Institute would be able to produce outputs that were worth selling. Following the needs of stakeholders, the arrangement of the Nutraceuticals Study curriculum off UMM is expected to penetrate the global market, following the development of science and technology and the world of work in various sectors.

Present at the FGD, Expert Staff on Innovation and Competitiveness of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Ananto Kusuma Seta, Ph.D. Also present were representing stakeholders who had collaborated in the establishment of this Study Program, namely from PT. ASIMAS represented by Sarjuni Damari, S.P, MM; from PT. Air Mancur represented by Yunita Rusyana Kurniasari, S. Farm, Apt ; PT. Kalbe represented by Sugito, S.Si; and representatives from UMM Hospital and Science Department and Food Technology (ITP) UMM. (apg)
