UMM Has Delegated Its Volunteering Team to Turkey

An earthquake with 7.8 on the richter scale has hit Turkey in early February. After that, there are various aftershocks that stretched along the fault zone that broke apart in Southern Turkey. Based on humanity, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) sent two delegations to join Muhammadiyah International Emergency Medical Team (EMT) to become volunteers to Turkey.

One of the UMM volunteers namely Rindya Fery Indrawan explained that EMT is a joint team from UMM Hospitals and all Muhammadiyah Institutions throughout Indonesia. On a disaster volunteer duty to Turkey, EMT collaborated with the Kementerian Luar Negeri (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and also the Kementerian Kesehatan (Ministry of Health). Aside from Fery, UMM also sent another delegation namely Zakarija Achmat, S.Psi., M.Sc.

"In Turkey, we are planning to build a two type of hospital and giving psychosocial support for the survivor. Before departing to Turkey, all the teams gathered in Jakarta to discuss more thoroughly about the logistics and medical supplies to be brought to Turkey," said Indra.

The location they visited was Hassa City, which is located in Hatay Province. Apart from helping both physically and psychologically, they also built an emergency hospital using a type 2 EMT tent. Up until today, the construction is still being constructed with a planned area of around 2000 square meters.

Indra conveyed that the members would stay in Turkey for a long time. He will be in Turkey until the end of February to help relieve the suffering caused by the disaster. They also try to provide happiness through various activities, it can be a games or other entertainment.

Regarding the involvement of EMT as volunteers in Turkey, Fery explained that EMT Muhammadiyah is the only volunteer team that has been certified by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020. By the leaving of EMT Muhammadiyah team, it expected that it can provide benefits to survivor residents.

"Hopefully our presence here can help a lot of people there and we can return safely to Indonesia," he ended. (put/wil)
