Higher education as a strategic partner of the Government had all aspects needed in the management of protected forests to be managed optimally. One of them was by making the management of forest areas as educational forest. In its action, it can be implemented through the implementation of research and development, education and training, as well as sustainable forestry counselling.
The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) through the Forestry and Animal Husbandry Department had the responsibility of managing the Special Purpose Forest Zone (KHDTK) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) of the Republic of Indonesia. This mandate was contained in the LHK Ministerial Decree which was submitted directly by the Minister of LHK Dr. Ir. Siti Nurbaya Bakar, M.Sc at the 91st UMM graduation event on Saturday (23/2).
The KHDTK locations managed in the form of educational forests were located in the production forest and protected forests of Perum Perhutani in plots of 43A, 44I, 44K-1, 44K-2, 44L and BE BKPH Pujon Malang KPH covering an area of 75.09 Ha. This location will be used as a field laboratory as well as learning media to manage forest areas with different conditions for the entire UMM academic community.

The educational forest was a research area and learning activities that can be used for students and the surrounding community in general. In law number 41 of 1999 concerning forestry states that in managing forests sustainably, quality human resources were needed that were characterized by mastery of science and technology.
In addition, explained Tatag Muttaqin S.Hut., M.Sc., HDI., Head of Forestry Department, UMM through his Department, won the trust to become a consultant tasked to direct until design field plans between the Japan International Forestry Promotion and Cooperation Center (JIFPRO) and Bromo National Park. This rehabilitation project took place since 2006 and was closed in 2015.

According to Tatag, through Forestry Department also, UMM had carried out part of Tri Darma's responsibilities, it was participating in managing and maintaining the environment. "This action must indeed be massive by every campus, so that not only the Government had that responsibility, but all elements of society must also contribute to guarding it," said Tatag.

The long-term plan of the UMM KHDTK forest land was, first, to realize the UMM campus with KHDTK as an international standard green ecosystem campus, with the achievement of Word Class University. Second, realizing the UMM campus through KHDTK actively organized the process of education, research and community service in accordance with Tri Dharma PT.
Third, realizing the UMM campus through the management of KHDTK to actively develop and disseminate knowledge, technology, humanities and the arts. In its management, UMM had divided the management plan into three phases. They were short term (2020-2022), medium term (2023-2028), long-term plans (2029-2040).
According to UMM Rector Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd., the freedom to manage this forest area will become new energy for UMM in assisting the community. In addition, the KHDTK forest will also be a field laboratory that can be utilized by all White Campus academics. "In the future, forest management will become a storefront related to good sustainable forest management," he concluded. (Win)
