The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) was chosen to be one of the hosts of the Public Lecture on Foreign Policy of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) with a theme of “10 Years of Indonesian Diplomacy” organized by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Uniquely, the event was held simultaneously at several universities in 38 provinces throughout the country at 10:00 WIB on August 20th. With the independence atmosphere, the public lecture was held in order to celebrate the 79th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, which is only two days different from the Indonesian Independence Day, as well as to bring the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' policies closer to the students and academic community.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno L. P. Marsudi, was also present to give a virtual and integrated keynote speech through a Zoom meeting. In her explanation, Retno highlighted the world conditions that are not okay. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the journey of foreign policy from year to year has been increasingly challenging and full of struggles during its process.

“The impact of COVID-19 is still being felt, the tax competition between the big countries is increasing. This rivalry causes greater difficulties for the world to solve its challenges and problems,” she explained.

Moreover, Retno conveyed the importance of the impact of consistently respecting international law. The world phenomenon that occurs, such as the long conflict between Palestine and Israel, is getting worse. According to her, if the world countries respected international law consistently, then the Palestinian state would have been independent and Israel would have been held responsible. In addition, there would not be more than 40,000 people killed in Gaza in the last 10 months.

Meanwhile, the Ambassador, Tri Tharyat, delivered a lecture on the last 10 years of Indonesia's diplomatic journey under the leadership of Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L. P. Marsudi. Interestingly, Indonesia's diplomatic role has been truly recognized by the world, even becoming the trusted partner.

There are several Indonesian diplomacies that are prioritized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The diplomacy highlighted includes RI Foreign Policy Priorities (Polugri) 4+1: Economic diplomacy, diplomacy for the protection of Indonesian citizens, sovereignty diplomacy, increasing Indonesia's contribution and leadership in the world region, and diplomacy infrastructure.

Furthermore, Tri Tharyat explained the struggles and challenges of Indonesian diplomacy in the midst of the world economic crisis. Indonesia's economic diplomacy includes 3 main points, which are: strengthening trade and investment, strengthening market penetration of Indonesia's strategic industrial products abroad, and strengthening health diplomacy.

Meanwhile, UMM Vice Chancellor 3, Dr. Nur Subeki, ST, MT, expressed his gratitude for UMM's assignment as the venue for the public lecture, which was simultaneously held in 38 provinces in Indonesia. It is a great trust from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to UMM. He also said that diplomacy also has a big role towards the Golden Indonesia 2045.

“Diplomacy is very important to achieve a Golden Indonesia in 2045. If we only wish for a Golden Indonesia of 2045, but do not have good diplomacy skills, then it will be difficult to realize. With the presence of students in this public lecture, they will get small keys to success,” he said. (Din/Faq/Put)
