UMM-Aisyiyah Provided Teachers to Write Story Books to Build Children's Character

Storytelling was part of learning material at the level of Kindergarten (TK) and Early Childhood Education (PAUD). The existence of this curriculum was as a means of building children's character. To support this thing, the teachers were not sufficiently capitalized in storytelling, but children's writing skills.

To improve teacher competency, the Institute for the Assessment and Empowerment of Women and Children (LP3A) of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held a workshop on writing children's stories in collaboration with Regional Leader ‘Aisyiyah East Java at UMM Senate Meeting Room, Tuesday (2/19) afternoon.

The workshop which was attended by 83 TK / PAUD teachers throughout East Java presented two competent presenters. It was lecturers of the Indonesian Language and Literature Department at UMM Teacher Training and Education Faculty Dr. Sugiarti, M.Pd and Solikhatul Fatonah Kurniawati alias Watiek Ideo, author of a famous Indonesian children's storybook.

Dra. Thathit Manon Andini, M.Hum, The Head of LP3A hoped that through the theme "Building the Character of Children through Children's Stories" carried out in this workshop, 'Aisyah kindergarten / ECD teachers in East Java can persuade their students to build positive characters through values presented story.

"From stories, we can improve children's imagination. We can also build the character of our students both social and individual. We put in the children's storybooks the Islamic character values.”Said the writer whose work was honoured by the Indonesian President, Ir. H. Joko Widodo.

While Dr. Sugiarti, M.Pd said, children's stories can be a very effective intermediary for educating children. Especially in the golden age or during the golden age of child development. So that the author did not only write creatively but also implements value.

"The process of creativity must be carried out by the teacher to process imagination. In addition, we also have to insert lessons that should be contained in children's storybooks. We packaged advice and important lessons that children should get through the creativity of children's storybooks, "she explained.

Participants were also invited to practice directly writing children's stories. This exercise was mentored directly by Watiek Idoe. The results of this workshop will be assembled in the form of a collection of children's storybooks which will be launched at the Ramadhan PW Muhammadiyah East Java recitation event next May. (Win)
