Becoming a content creator is a coveted profession for Generation Z today. This is supported by data showing a 30% increase in the growth rate of content creators in 2022. To this day, becoming a content creator still offers significant opportunities. This aligns with what Presthya, Senior Manager of Strategic Partnership at YouTube, shared during YouTube Campus Day at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) on June 4th. This event was a collaboration between YouTube, UMM, and Telkomsel.
Furthermore, Thya, as she is affectionately known, mentioned that there are still significant opportunities for young people to become creators of short video content on YouTube. This is due to the large number of YouTube users in Indonesia, which has reached 110 million viewers of both long and short videos. This is a substantial number compared to the 180 million people who have internet access.
“Now, it’s up to the creators to establish their unique characteristics and attract viewers. They need to capture attention and keep viewers watching their videos,” she said.

Thya suggested several steps to become a content creator. First, determine what content to create. For example, if someone enjoys playing games, they could upload gameplay videos or stream games with their audience. Second, maintain consistency in uploading content to YouTube, perhaps by following a predetermined schedule.
Also present at the event was Hari Obbie, a YouTube content creator from the channel "Kamu Juga Bisa," who offered tips. He explained that to support consistent content planning, participants could use free online tools such as AI. “Today, the development of AI greatly helps speed up the content research process. However, it’s also essential to have a foundation in content creation, such as showcasing unique characteristics,” he said.
According to Obbie, there is also the 5W+1H concept in creating content. This foundation is necessary to create something more beneficial for viewers. “For instance, if you want to create food-related content, the video can be tied to the impact and why the content should be made. Where is it located, how does it taste, and so on,” added the UMM alumnus.
Also adding to the excitement was Fatwa Lahum Yasaruna, better known as Wawa Yasaruna, a travel content creator and UMM Communication Studies graduate. He said that to become a creator, some essential tools include a tripod, simple lighting, and a smartphone.
“Friends should also frequently scroll through social media. This activity isn’t taboo because it helps us see what’s trending and get new ideas for content,” he added.

However, Mirza Budiawan, Vice President of Business Area Java Bali at Telkomsel, reminded that social media is like a double-edged sword. It can yield positive or negative outcomes in the future, depending on how it is used. “If you want to become a content creator, remember to guide netizens positively. Social media can also become a boomerang for oneself and others,” he emphasized. (tri/wil/fajr)
