Quake 7.7 SR in Canada, Triggers Tsunami in Hawaii

VIVAnews- Earthquake of 7.7 magnitude which is thousands of kilometers from Canada triggered tsunami that hit kepulaian in Hawaii. However, reported no damage from the tsunami.

Reporting from the BBC page, Sunday, October 28, 2012, an emergency siren sounded on Saturday night to remind residents about the islands around Hawaii. The first wave was reported at 2.5 feet (76 centimeters) in one area. Waves as high as 3-6 feet expected in some areas.

There were no reports of damage in coastal Canada after the earthquake. Tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas of Alaska and British Columbia.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 125 miles (200 km) southwest of the city of Prince Rupert Canadian mining, at a depth of 11 miles (18 km).

Initially, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no expected threat outside the area. However, later said: "The tsunami generated can cause damage along the coastline and outlying islands in the state of Hawaii."

The first wave was predicted to arrive at around 22:30 local time (08:30 GMT). "Urgent action should be taken to save lives and property," the warning said.

After the first wave hit, the Governor of Hawaii, Brian Schatz, said the wave of water had receded in Hilo harbor, Hawaii. He also reminded that the first wave is usually not the biggest, and the waves can continue for six to seven hours.

Local media reported a wave height recorded across the island of six inches to 2.5 feet in one place. Hawaii itself is made up of hundreds of islands spread of 1,500 miles.
