A melodious singing voice was heard from the location of the New Student Study Introduction (Pesmaba) Faculty of Psychology (Fapsi) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). The voice source was Akhmad Ali Akbar, a new student with disabilities who sang along with other Fapsi first-year students. Even though he has limitations, Akbar, as he is usually called, remains confident and has good talent and skills in the field of music.
Apart from singing, Akbar can also play the keyboard and guitar well. Not infrequently, a student from Pasuruan appears at various events and festivals. Starting from the school level to the province. His passion for music also led him to explore keyboard and guitar skills.
"My father was the one who encouraged me to play music. It was my father who bought me a keyboard when I was in elementary school. Even by bringing in a teacher to train my keyboard skills up to high school. Maybe from there, my confidence is reasonable, and it's not easy to lose myself, "explained Akbar.
He admitted that his choice to study Psychology at UMM was right. Moreover, Akbar dreams of becoming a psychologist who can help others—supported by UMm Fapsi accreditation, which is already Superior. Although he was a little hesitant, Akbar was happy because the facilities at UMM were adequate, especially for individuals with such limitations.
"Alhamdulillah, the facilities at UMM are friendly enough for me. Especially the one at the location where I studied, GKB 4. The elevator already has a foot button, and the toilet is supportive, even with the class. The Pesmaba that was carried out was also enjoyable, especially the flashlight mob, which was more interesting than other universities," he added.
The new student from Pasuruan wants to build a program to support people with disabilities like himself. He wanted to invite them to remain confident despite inadequate circumstances. He believes that his disabled friends must have advantages that can be maximized and highlighted so that they can achieve their dreams. Through his efforts and works, Akbar wants to prove that one's limitations are not an excuse for not succeeding.
"People like me are usually insecure. So, I want to change that by building a program with my friends. Even if I have the opportunity to be a speaker, I will continue to voice that physically disabled people are also able to contribute to the nation. I hope that my efforts to study at UMM can pave the way for this struggle. Moreover, it is supported by UMM's commitment to serving Indonesia as the White Campus program, namely Sharing for the Country," concluded Akbar. (cdr/wil)
