Farid Abdul Rahman, an alumnus of the Islamic Economics Study Program at the Faculty of Islamic Religion (FIR), University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), has successfully run a coffeeshop business. He managed to earn tens of millions of profits a month while providing jobs for the youth.
Farid, his nickname, admitted that he dared to run a coffeeshop business known as SensCafe due to the knowledge he received from UMM. During his studies, he was very keen on material about management, from financial management, risk, and operations. According to him, all the knowledge that has been acquired will be in vain if it is not being implemented.
“The knowledge from the campus is very useful, especially since I am from the Islamic Economy Study Program and received the knowledge related to management. I implemented all of that by opening and running this coffee shop business,” he said.

He admitted that the initial cost of this coffeeshop business was mostly from the rest of his wedding expenses and various other savings, which amounted to 50 million. He has experienced various challenges and obstacles since officially opening his coffee shop. In 2018, he moved from one location to another. Start from the Malang Raya area, then move to Bangil Pasuruan. Now it is located in Ampeldento Karangploso, Malang Regency, which is located in the area behind campus 3 UMM.
“SensCafe has been running since 2021. I have started studying and starting a coffeeshop business since 2018, when I was a final semester student. I am basically an activist in the Muhammadiyah Student Association. Back then, we MSA members often changed our hangout spots. From there I tried to rent a place for a coffee shop that could also be a base camp. Seeing the decent turnover, I was hooked on the coffeeshop business,” he said.
A strong determination, perseverance, and a willingness to do spiritual sacrifices are the keys that Farid always holds on to. Especially considering that being an entrepreneur is not easy. All sectors in the business must be considered intensively and require continuous evaluation.

He advised all students who are currently starting a business to not be too hasty in pursuing expectations of results in their business. “You must be willing to fast. Fasting here means being able to increase patience, maintain finances well, be able to make decisions with a cool head, and not be hasty. During the business pioneering period, there may be more unpleasantness. But over time, when all aspects of the business are strong, the results can exceed expectations,” he said. (faq/wil/put)
