The way to pronounce QRIS, the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standards abbrev, recently sparked considerable debate. It functions as a payment system in Indonesia. Some pronounce it kyuris, while others are kris. Some even pronounce the word kiris or keris. Then, what is the exact pronunciation of the word “QRIS” based on the correct spelling?
To respond to this phenomenon, the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Lecturer at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Drs. Sudjalil, M.Si., M.Pd. shares his explanation. According to him, in Indonesian language rules, there is a typical pronunciation letter and a standard pronunciation corresponding to the letter. “So, QRIS is pronounced kris not kyu,ar or something else”, said the Lecturer.
The man known as Sujadlil explains that the Indonesian language has word shortening, which has phonological rules. The term QRIS comes from an English abbreviation. Despite that, how to pronounce the word must align with the Indonesian letter pronunciation.
“Many people, indeed, mispronounce a word. Mainly the Indonesian language does have many foreign words. For ex mple, the word ‘target’ is pronounced tarjet, and so is ‘manajemen’, which is pronounced menejemen. The sa e thing also applies to “AC”, which is said ase instead of ‘ace’,” explained Sujadlil.
According to him, Indonesian pronunciation must also align with the language rules. Most people only adapt to the familiarity of pronouncing words without knowing which one is right and which is wrong. There s a mispronunciation, but often practiced as it is already widely used in the community. Also, correct pronunciation exists but is ignored because it is considered unsuitable and not pleasing to the ears.

“Related to QRIS, its way of pronouncing is similar to how to say IQ. The ri ht pronunciation is iki, instead of aikyu, and so is the pronunciation of QRIS, which is said kris. It must be pronounced to familiarize people. It is common for the correct pronunciation to be underestimated by those around, although it is right,” concluded the Indonesian Language and Literature Education at UMM. (imh/nel/wil)
