The exciting news came again from students of the Faculty of Law, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). This time Bagas Aditya Firmandail has succeeded in winning the 2nd place in the muay thai martial arts competition which was held at the end of March. Bagas, who represents Malang City, has been involved in muay thai since he was in high school.

Bagas explained that during the process of the competition he experienced quite complicated problems. For example, his weight exceeded the limit by about 10 kg. He had to go on a strict diet for about a month before the competition. “During the diet I ate more protein and wheat to maintain my endurance. However, as the competition day was approaching, my weight still did not meet the criteria, so I often drank water without eating,” he said.

The student in his fourth semester also said that during the competition, he also had a painful experience. Competing against a professional muay thai athlete from Surabaya, he received a laceration to his mouth and had to undergo surgery with four stitches. It caused him to retire in the final round.

“I think these stitches show my seriousness in muay thai. The more pain and injuries, the higher the skill. It's not a problem and I'm still optimistic that I'll be able to participate next time,” he explains.

The first of three siblings has been studying muay thai since high school. He said that as a child he often fought and clashed with his friends. Then he finally realized that he could do something useful, namely muay thai. Since 2021, he has participated in many competitions and has always brought home medals.

“There is no turning back in the pursuit of achievement. Even though my big family is often against it because of injuries and health, I want to try until the end and prove that through this hobby I can make them proud,” he said.

Like any other student, Bagas always wants to achieve and make the campus proud. He believes that everyone has advantages, they just haven't realized and honed their abilities. “From this competition, I hope to make the campus proud and continue to be active as an athlete. I have high dreams so that I can make my university proud and elevate my family's status,” he concluded. (ri/wil/put)
