Discussing Children's Songs, UMM Alumni Wins Asia Pacific Broadcaster Event

An alumna of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Esty Sulistya, successfully won the 1st place in the prestigious Asia Pacific Broadcast Union (ABU) Prizes 2024 competition. She, who is also a practicing lecturer at UMM's Indonesian Language Education Study Program, managed to beat her competitors. Esty managed to advance and beat other contestants from 65 countries, five continents, and with 342 works. The ABU Prizes are part of the 61st ABU General Assembly Series, which was held at the Hilton Bosphorus Hotel, Istanbul, Turkey on October 22.

Esty is a presenter at Pro 1 Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) Malang. She won first place in the Radio on Air Personality category. There are several aspects that are assessed, ranging from the ability to broadcast, dig up information, process words, present harmony, comfort, personality in broadcasting, to the ability to handle listeners and make sources feel comfortable.

"There are also five assessment criteria that are used as a reference in this category, namely creativity, depth of presenter knowledge, ability to connect with listeners, voice quality and editorial understanding of a presenter," explained Esty, as known as Etik Sulistyaningsih.

At the session, she highlighted an interesting topic, namely the crisis of children's songs in Indonesia in the last two decades, both in terms of quality and quantity. She summed it up nicely in his material entitled "Melodies for Indonesian Children". He also invited musicians, the music industry, parents, and the government to jointly promote and invite children to sing songs that build the character of Indonesian children's personality.

"Children are the future of our nation. So, we should have many children's songs about patriotism, friendship, love, tolerance and empathy," she said.

Her current success did not come instantly. She had to go through a long process to become a winner. The woman, who has been working as an announcer, presenter and radio reporter for 25 years, had to go through three stages of judging at the national level. Before she was finally selected to represent Indonesia at the prestigious event.

She competed with representatives from 69 RRIs in Indonesia to be selected as the top five and then the top three. At this stage, the three participants were accompanied for debriefing, new productions and revisions until they were appointed as Indonesian representatives. Meanwhile, at the international level, 342 works were submitted by participants from 65 countries to be selected by 60 pre-selection judges.

“The final judging was held in Kuala Lumpur last September 10-12 with 18 judges and 60 works of participants who were finalists in all categories. Alhamdulillah, I won in the ABU Prizes 2024 Radio on Air Personality category,” she said.

In fact, Esty has been active as an MC, moderator and public speaker since before college. Not only in the professional world, she also made many achievements in college as a UMM Communication Science student. First winner of UMM's outstanding student in 1998, first winner of UMM's scientific writing competition, to become a graduate with the best graduate I at UMM university level. This year she also had the opportunity to represent the Voice of Indonesia (VOI) RRI foreign broadcasting channel.

Lastly, she hopes that radio will remain a viable medium as technology advances. In addition, radio has a large audience around the world. "Radio will not die because it can change with the times and become a medium of communication for everyone," she concluded. (Zaf/Wil/ind)
