Five vice-rectors and a secretary of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) were successfully inaugurated on April 5, 2024. They will support and assist the new rector, Prof. Dr. Nazaruddin Malik, M.Si., in leading the White Campus and continuing the development of education for the next five years.
The first vice-rector of UMM for education, teaching, and digital technology is held by Prof. Akhsanul In'am, Ph.D., while the second vice-rector is entrusted to Dr. Ahmad Juanda, Ak., M.M., CA., responsible for general affairs and finance. Meanwhile, Dr. Nur Subeki, M.T., remains trusted to continue his role as the third vice-rector for student affairs and alumni. In the field of research, community service, and cooperation, Muhamad Salis Yuniardi, M.Psi, PhD., assumes the position of the fourth vice-rector.
Meanwhile, the fifth vice rector is Prof. Dr. Tri Sulistyaningsih, M.Si., responsible for fostering character and human resource development. Lastly, the position of secretary of the White Campus is now entrusted to Prof. Dr. Sidik Sunaryo, M.Si., M.Hum.
In his speech, Vice Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Educational and Research Council, Prof. Dr. Achmad Nurmandi, M.Sc., explained that there are 95 outstanding universities in Indonesia, and 11 of them are Muhammadiyah institutions. Upon closer inspection, religious organizations with outstanding universities are Muhammadiyah and also Catholic Christian ones. This is because both have matured institutionally.
"Another interesting thing is that many Muhammadiyah universities are established by regions but managed from the center. The central body does not provide funding but controls. Meanwhile, rectors at each university do not protest but sincerely accept it. This ethos is often considered strange by friends from abroad," he said.
Nurmandi added that out of the 11 outstanding Muhammadiyah universities, only four are included in the Asian rankings. Among them are UMM, UMY, UAD, and UMS. This is important as an international recognition of Muhammadiyah's management of higher education. Regarding vice-rectors, he explained that they are indeed technocrats or experts in their fields. "However, there is also a political side, namely, how to become opinion leaders. Hopefully, UMM can become even more successful in the future," he said.
On the other hand, UMM Rector Nazaruddin stated that UMM will not lack intelligent individuals. Moreover, the White Campus is formed from various aspects of superior human resources. Therefore, cooperation among human resources is key to driving the generation towards progress.
"Without all of us, this UMM educational organization will never function. As an educational institution, UMM must be able to provide light, energy, and strength to produce future golden generations. Hopefully, we can all strengthen Muhammadiyah's commitment to developing progressive Islamic views and missions," he concluded.(*)
