As if never-ending, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) students have consistently scored achievement after achievement. Recently, Indonesian Language and Literature Education (PBSI) students won the national first place in the dramatical reading competition. The event was held by the Study Program Student Association (HMPS) PBSI Ahmad Dahlan University (UAD) last December.
Afif Yudi Kurniawan as the coordinator of the group, explained that dramatical reading is a performance of reading a script. Not just reading, but they have to demonstrate and dramatize it. At the event, he and his team presented a hand by Usmar Ismail entitled 'My Father Is Home.'
"We brought this script in a course related to drama. Then we develop and complete it to be able to give maximum results in this event," he added.
This script tells of a father who leaves his family when facing problems. However, the family did not receive him well when he came home. Afifi finds the background and atmosphere quite interesting, namely in Ramadan.
Afif said that they felt that what was learned in the motion and oratory courses was very helpful during the competition. These courses teach how to process breath, movement, and expression. The three aspects studied were considered to have an essential role in achieving victory.
This Lumajang native student again added that one of his biggest motivations was to implement what he had learned during college. So it's not only material, but you can directly practice it in various activities. That way, he and his friends can remember all the things taught.
Afif is not alone in participating in the competition. He was accompanied by five of his friends who acted as actors, including Septi Karina, Novita Eka Miranda, Aryandi Bimbi Arifatur, M. Khikam Zahidi, and M. Azrul Nizam. There were problems with timing and taking videos, but they managed to overcome them well thanks to the help of various parties. Moreover, this is the first virtual competition that is followed.
“We wanted to be able to perform offline in front of a boisterous audience. Want to feel how the atmosphere of the stage is seen directly by the participants and lovers of literature. Hopefully, what we have achieved can encourage other students to excel,” he said. (cdr/haq/wil)
