Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) recently hosted a unique event. Following successful and engaging activities, UMM organized a different kind of bazaar. The organizers demanded that visitors and sellers use English in their buying and selling processes.
Students from the Foreign Language Speaking Program (FLSP) from four programs participated in the bazaar: Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Public Administration, and Law. Kholilurahman, the FLSP Speaking lecturer, mentioned that this bazaar provided a platform for students to apply and get accustomed to using English. Thirty stands offered various unique products ranging from food and drinks to clothing and handmade crafts.
"This bazaar serves as an implementation of FLSP learning. Students are free to be creative according to their preferences, from product innovation to sales techniques, advertising, and more," he added.

The program, initiated by Kholil and his three colleagues, stemmed from their desire to implement a unique learning method. Students were encouraged to hone their English-speaking skills in public settings. Furthermore, the Director of the Language Center (LC) and the UMM Campus supported this learning method.
The LC is an English language learning institution for UMM students, training them to apply English according to their respective fields. One of its programs is FLSP.
Uniquely, both sellers and buyers had to use English during transactions. Just like Resti Amelia Putri from the Law Faculty. She and her team sold "rainbow potatoes," fried potatoes with sweet cream. "Honestly, my team and I were delighted with this bazaar. Initially, we felt awkward because we rarely used English. However, as time passed, we got used to it and even became enthusiastic," she said.

Aside from developing English language skills, she felt that her entrepreneurial abilities grew because of this bazaar. She and her team even created a delicious and attractive product: fried potatoes with sweet cream.
"Normally, potatoes are seasoned with common flavourings, but we wanted to try something different. We provided testers that attracted buyers. Plus, we didn't serve those who didn't use English," she explained.
The visitors weren't solely from UMM; many young people and locals also attended, like Nadila Riska Putri Zubaidah, a student at the University (UB). Nadil's student said she learned about this bazaar through her friends. "I find this FLSP bazaar incredibly exciting, especially having to use English during transactions. I was initially surprised, but it was a unique experience," she said. (*tri/wil/fajr)
