More than 6000 new students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) were welcomed with a guest lecture by Pambudi Sunarsihanto, MBA, M.Sc. Director of Human Capital of Kapal Api Group. The event was held at the UMM Dome Hall on September 19 with the title "You Are the Pilot of Your Career". He began the guest lecture by quoting words from Michelangelo, which served as a motivation for young people to pursue their careers.
"I quote the words of Michelangelo: the biggest threat to the success of our lives does not come from setting our goals so high that we are unable to achieve them fully. However it comes from setting goals that are too flat, so that it is easy to achieve them," said Pambudi.
He also shared tips on how to prepare yourself to face a volatile era. According to him, each person must have uniqueness and differentiation from other individuals. Especially, considering that currently there are too many graduates in Indonesia, but the quality is only mediocre.
"Everyone must have differentiators, both in terms of skills, language abilities, achievements, and lived experiences. All of these assets that young people must have. Never underestimate efforts to improve your quality," he advised.
Furthermore, the man from Magetan explained that the world is full of uncertainties. Nothing lasts forever in the world, including innovations. Market demands are dynamic and evolve with the times. Many companies that were initially successful eventually faded, because they lacked innovation.

Pambudi also told the stories of entrepreneurs in developing large companies. Starting from Kapal Api, which started as an ordinary coffee seller at Tanjung Priok harbour, and Aqua, which started by selling mineral water from house to house. Gradually, they created innovations by beautifying packaging, improving quality, and strengthening branding. He also emphasized that innovation is not only about business, but it can be flexible to various sectors including da'wah.
"What's the message from that story? They are not confined in running a business. That is also what can be done in terms of da'wah. For example, Wali Songo created da'wah innovations through various intermediaries such as puppetry. Consequently, don't expect success to be achieved at the beginning of your career," he explained.
Finally, he advised all young people to stop overthinking their careers. Likewise, be reckless in your steps and the pursuing career path. Based on his opinion, there are three ideal aspects of taking a career. Specifically, the career is in a preferred field, someone is better than others, and profits can be generated.
"Don't think too much if you want a career. You must dare to have big dreams, start from simple things, and dare to act. If you only think, there will only be thoughts," he concluded. (Faq/Wil/Fajr)
