To generate skillful human resources in industrial research and structured simulation, the Mechanical Engineering of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) runs a Center of Excellence (CoE) program called Construction & Vehicle (CVS) that is in line with the Independent Learning-Independent Campus (Trans.: Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka) program of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia.
One of the department lecturers, Alvian Iqbal Hanif Nasrullah, ST. MT. explains that this CoE class is established in response to HR construction analysis. "Almost all design and manufacturing industries must have construction analysis to test the strength of materials against loading, and so does the automotive industry requiring explicit dynamic and multi-body dynamics as passenger safety certification, so the job opportunities in this area are widely open," added the Lecturer.
The CoE also tries to fulfill the automotive industry's needs, especially in vehicle crashworthiness analysis, so that the participants can learn about dynamic and static analysis and crash simulation.

This CoE program has been established since last year and has collaborated with various business and industrial companies, such as PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA), PT Petrosea, PT Tiga Pilar Energi, INKA Multisolusi, PT Vela Prima Nusantara, etc.
Alvian said that the innovation receives positive responses from the community and students. The CoE program already has seven intensive classes: Vehicle Dynamics, Vehicle Crashworthiness, Computer-Assisted Engineering, Structure Analysis, Element Methods, Pneumatic Hydraulic, and Railway Systems. Uniquely, the teachers are no longer lecturers but practitioners instead.
"This step is an acceleration for students to expand their knowledge before going into the (workplace) field. After (being equipped with) material, the students can intern in a partnership industry through the Joint Industrial Study Internship (Trans.: Magang Studi Industri Bersama [MSIB]) or by themselves," said Alvian.
He emphasizes that those who have finished the CVS class have increased competency in the structural analysis field. It can influence them to complete their thesis or research quickly and satisfactorily.

Due to the amount of material and knowledge equipped by the practitioners, students also have abilities that follow market and industrial needs so that it can warrant the students' employability in companies.
"With this excellent CoE class, Mechanical Engineering increasingly has its special identity and excellence as well as improves the recognition of the study program at the national and international levels," ended the Lecturer. (rul/wil)
