Job opportunities are getting fewer, demanding the youth, including students, to be more creative in earning money. It has also been undertaken by Wildan Faris, one of the alumni of the Agribusiness Study Program at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) who has just graduated this December. He successfully ran a sugarcane business from a young age in Bululawang.

Wildan says that being in the agricultural industry is not a new thing for him. From his childhood, he had been taught by his family to farm papaya fruit. However, due to the pandemic, he and his family switched to sugarcane. According to him, besides being easy to maintain, sugarcane is also easy to manage because it is not easy to rot.

"Currently, I have been working with 20 to 30 small farmers to supply sugarcane. Alhamdulillah, the business is currently progressing due to the cooperation with the cooperative of the village where I live," he said.

Furthermore, Wildan said that currently his business has become one of the partner groups participating in the Sugar Factory (SF) owned by a State-Owned Enterprise (SOE). According to him, many benefits can be found. Starting from the supply of seeds to fertilizers for sugar cane cultivation that have been provided by The SF.

"The profit I receive is quite large, from the deposit to the SF, it will be shared with other farmers. Moreover, the free fertilizer is also a help for us as farmers because the price of fertilizer has increased, making us unable to get good fertilizer," he said.

This cooperation has been running since 2004 until now. To this day, he is still trusted to send 5-8 tons of sugarcane to SF every day. The sugarcane shipped is not only his, but also belongs to small farmers who participate in the partnership. "Thus, I also help the small farmers to get profit," he said.

The youth from Malang also has high initiative to help the small farmers. For example, when he was doing his internship in one of the government administrations, he proposed the eradication of the refraction system, which cuts the cost of harvesting if the results are not satisfying.

"This refraction system is also the title of my thesis. I hope that the society can also pay attention to small farmers and help them to get a better life," he concluded. (ri/wil/put)
