Successfully partnering with numerous universities around the world, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) remains actively involved in various international activities. One such example is Sholahuddin Al Fatih, S.H., M.H., a lecturer from UMM’s Law Faculty, who recently traveled to Portugal for the Erasmus+ Teaching Mobility Program at the University of Minho (UMinho) for five days this October. The Teaching Mobility Program is a faculty exchange initiative that involves sharing and discussions on the academic backgrounds of each participant, insights into campus realities, and an opportunity to learn Portuguese.
Fatih, as he is commonly called, shared that his discussions went beyond legal systems, as he also learned much about public relations in Portugal. This included effective communication strategies and ways to build confidence in new students. He was particularly impressed by UMinho's branding program and slogan, 'Show UMinho,' also known as 'This is UMinho' or 'I am UMinho.'

“In my opinion, 'Show UMinho' is a compelling and well-structured branding program that could be applied in other institutions. From the moment new students join the campus, they are introduced to the program and slogan, embedding values that help students develop a deep connection with the university,” he explained.
He also noted differences in UMinho's management and learning systems compared to those in most Indonesian universities. UMinho’s flexible class schedules allow students to learn more efficiently during their academic hours. Moreover, similar to most European universities, there is no sense of intimidation between professors and students on campus.
“There are three positive aspects that I would like to bring back to UMM. First is the flexible learning system, which eases the burden on students. Second, the well-structured branding program that enhances campus comfort through internalized values. Lastly, fostering a safe, comfortable, and respectful environment,” Fatih added.
In addition to his campus experiences, Fatih had the chance to take a field trip to several libraries and historical sites in Braga. He expressed admiration for Braga’s history and culture, including its significant role in the founding of Portugal and the community’s emphasis on pedestrian safety. Another interesting observation was the high level of quality control in Portugal's restaurants regarding cleanliness and food safety.

Finally, Fatih also highlighted the importance of associations among Indonesian speakers in Portugal, as they provided a positive support network that helped with adaptation to new environments. He hopes to absorb and implement much of the knowledge and innovations gained at UMinho to benefit UMM in the future. (din/wil/Fajr)
