A job is an important part of human life to make a living and existence. However, it cannot be denied that sometimes boredom comes. Without handling it, it will have a negative impact on the employee or individual as well as the company. Lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Devina Andriany, M.Psi. said that the boredom is different from burnout.
“Boredom occurs when work assignments are less challenging, while burnout is happened due to chronic stress related to work. The early signs of burnout includes extreme fatigue, loss of motivation, and the appearance of various physical symptoms," she explains.

Devina continued, since they are two different conditions, the strategies to overcome them are also different. To deal with boredom, it is necessary to add more challenging tasks, while to overcome burnout, stress management and self-care are the key.
"Positively, boredom can be a motivation for employees to make changes to their work. Trying to synchronize their personal interests with work, seeking new challenges, or developing new skills," adds Devina.
In order to handle the boredom, Devina says that there are several strategies that can be used, such as applying mindfulness to focus on the task. "In addition, setting clear goals increases the enthusiasm in doing something. Another thing that can be done is to try hobbies outside of work that are fun. Finally, you can also celebrate small successes to overcome the phenomenon of boredom," she explained.

At the end, Devina said that in overcoming boredom and burnout, the employee and the organization must work together. Therefore, it is not only the employees who anticipate and solve the problem, but also the organization or company. It includes increasing the awareness of the early signs of burnout, managing workload, and creating a positive work environment. "Thus, the happiness and productivity of employees can be maintained. When productivity increases, it is not only individuals who get the benefit. The organization or company that holds it also gets these benefits," Devina concluded. (*azmi/wil/put)
