Da'wah, through art and culture, is much easier than decades ago. Deddy Mizwar emphasized this in the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Ramadan Tadarus on April 14, 2023. There also present Muhammad Dwiki Dharmawan, who was also the speaker. Both inspire good preaching strategies through art and culture.
Deddy's presence was also enlivened by a theatrical performance by UMM students and the angklung of Malang street musicians, along with the UMM alumnus, a painter who painted the UMM dome on-site using both his legs.
Furthermore, according to Deddy, making films or content about kindness can be done using a mobile phone. Then, it can be broadcasted in various alternative media that many people can see. It's different from the old days when there were only two alternatives, television (TV) or big screen. Plus, it costs a significant amount.
"Of course it's much easier than it used to be. So, I think we have to do da'wah through art and culture and we have to be more creative. The challenges that must be faced nowadays are what content will be made and how interesting the content is," he added.
Deddy also talked about the beginning of his efforts to create content with Islamic religious content. He felt that, in the past, various electronic shows did not show that Indonesia was a country with the largest Muslim population in the world. Even though more than 85% of its citizens are Muslim, the available broadcasts do not reflect this fact.
Then he started to make shows with Islamic elements in them. He began by having the opportunity to fill in space on one of the private TV stations by making a series called Abu Nawas. However, he admitted that the effort took work. He must be able to ensure that the public will like Islamic content.
"Even though I told the TV crew they didn't have to pay me as a producer. Pay me if I play in it as an actor. But in my heart, I really believe that Islamic families in Indonesia need broadcasts with Islamic content," said the man, who is also a PP Muhammadiyah LSB Expert Council member.
Deddy also considered that the film was like magic. It can make the audience cry, laugh or get angry just through pictures and videos. The presentation of films affects the audience. He stated that various elements of society must carry this responsibility. Not only limited to TV or movies but also on social media in general.
Finally, he also said that film reflects the reality in society, even with the belief that Indonesia's diverse culture has extraordinary potential. It's just that Kraung is optimal and maximal from the aspect of cultivation.
"If someone asks me why I am trying to make Islamic religious films and content, I will answer that it is a form of gratitude. Mainly for the gift and ability to make films that Allah has bestowed upon me in this life. If I make shows that are not clear, financial benefits may not be obtained. Even a loss for giving things that are not good. On the other hand, Islamic film may not provide material benefits, but I will definitely benefit because they are worth worship," he concluded.
