Studying philosophy is crucial for policy-makers in higher education in Indonesia, as said by the Great Ambassador of Indonesia for UNESCO in the book review agenda of the book “Filsafat Sains dalam Konteks Interpretasi Filosofis untuk Pendidikan Tinggi Indonesia” (Trans.: The Philosophy of Science in the Context of Philosophical Interpretation for Indonesian Higher Education), published by the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Press. The agenda held on July 17th was followed by several lecturers and philosophy activists.
The ambassador, Ismunandar, said that more philosophy books discussing higher education in Indonesia need to be published. That way, there will be more development—especially since science philosophy is crucial for thinking deeply.
“The interesting thing about this book is the discussion about the philosophy of science and religions, which often becomes a huge debate. But the book author, Prof. Hadi Nur, Ph.D., managed to explain how religion and philosophy can strengthen each other. This book consists of 32 topics that can be read and explored,” said Ismunandar.
On the other hand, Assoc. Prof. Ajang Budiman, who ever served as a book reviewer, is amazed by Hadi's book. He admitted that he had never found a philosophy book that was down to earth and relevant to the educational context in Indonesia. According to him, this work can erase the stigma in society that philosophy is a complex science.
"This book uses a philosophical interpretation approach, which is a practical method to comprehensively explain or analyze a phenomenon or concept. It creates a more effective and interesting teaching approach for students," said Ajang.
Ajang also shared this book's advantage and another characteristic: a holistic view of science. The topics discussed can also be considered equal so that the readers can have a range of social backgrounds. The related book can make its readers think critically.
Meanwhile, Prof. Hadi, the writer, said that this book merges all his thoughts that were only written in his blog. Besides, this book portrays his expression from his teaching experience as a philosophy lecturer. The book’s topics are linked to 4 scientific domains: scientific method, sociology, communication science, and science and religion.
“This book also explores academic, science, and daily life issues with science philosophy. It aims to make us more aware and wiser in looking at life,” said Hadi.
Furthermore, Hadi asserts that philosophy and wisdom must go together. Philosophy is used to find a deep understanding of life, while wisdom aims to apply that conceptual understanding in every step of life. Both aspects are the labyrinth of human life. (imh/zak/wil)
