Currently, access to learning has become very easy, especially with the massive presence of digital information technology. This was emphasized by Agus Kurniawan, Director of PT. Matahari Kahuripan Indonesia (Makin Group), to all the 112th graduates of Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM) on February 27, 2024.

"You can even learn self-taught very easily. No need to bother, like my time when I had to walk to the library and search for references," he explained.

The man, who is also an alumnus of UMM from the 1987 class majoring in Biology Education, also shared his story during his college days. During his college years, he once became the chairman of the student association of his department, which led him to dream of becoming a lecturer. However, considering his mediocre academic achievements, he eventually realized himself and aspired to become a teacher.

Agus recounted that during the final semester of his studies, he had already started a career as a junior-senior high school teacher. Then, upon graduation, he even failed the civil service entrance exam (CPNS) three times. Until finally, he applied to more than 200 companies.

"I eventually tried my luck in various companies and institutions. Alhamdulillah, I was accepted as a marketing supervisor in a distribution company in East Java, and shortly after I was transferred to the personnel department," he said.

Starting with his experience in personnel, he embarked on his long journey. From working as an HRD in the shoe industry in Gresik to becoming a recruitment training manager in a paper company in Surabaya. His career continued to soar, becoming a consultant trainer in Singapore, Pakuwon Group, and now serving as a director at Makin Group.

"It is indeed far from my college major in biology education. However, the important point is the spirit to continue learning never ceases. Especially since I learned a lot self-taught in the field of personnel. So, you graduates, don't feel satisfied even though you have graduated from college. Learning is lifelong because life is very dynamic," he said.

On the other hand, the Chairman of the Daily Governing Board (BPH) of UMM Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, M.A.P. conveyed that the world is currently entering a rapid era of digitization, including the development of AI. This can be both an advantage and a threat. However, he is optimistic that UMM graduates can take good advantage of technological advancements.

Therefore, Muhadjir advises all graduates to prioritize strong digital literacy. Especially since Indonesia will welcome a demographic bonus in 2045. In that year, graduates will enter the productive age and are guaranteed to occupy strategic positions in companies, government, and the Muhammadiyah organization.

Meanwhile, UMM Rector Prof. Dr. Nazaruddin Malik, SE., M.Si. believes that UMM graduates have been equipped with sufficient provisions. They will not lag behind in the sophistication of intelligence and are capable of using it for progress. He is optimistic that UMM graduates will not only seek jobs but also have the potential to create jobs. So that they are not only beneficial to themselves but also to society.(Faq/Wil/Fajr)
